Environment, Sustainabilty & Leisure

Building stronger, more inclusive neighbourhoods where everyone can thrive.

Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all residents’, businesses, and partners through a wide range of services, the Environment, Sustainability & Leisure department consists of roughly 2,500 people with a core aim of ensuring Southwark is a clean, safe, and vibrant place where opportunities and activities are accessible for all.

Structured into six key areas: Environment, Leisure, Local Economy, Climate Change and Neighbourhoods, each service focuses on specific aspects of borough life, enabling a comprehensive approach to meet the diverse needs of our communities.

Delivering high quality front-line services, the department actively contributes to the wellbeing of our residents while supporting the objectives of various council initiatives. From managing waste and regulatory services to promoting health through leisure and cultural programs, our ultimate focus is on creating an environment that fosters community engagement and inclusivity.

The impact of the department is felt throughout the borough. From maintaining street cleanliness, to transforming public spaces and managing regulations for private renters. Our commitment to climate actions involves key initiatives such as decarbonising buildings, attracting climate investments and setting ambitious targets to combat climate change.

Additionally, we prioritise leisure and culture through our award-wining parks, modern sports facilities, and rich cultural offerings. Through effective engagement with the community and voluntary sectors, we address key social issues, support vulnerable residents, and work towards creating a fairer and more inclusive borough.
