Description

Southwark is a brilliantly diverse and economically varied borough, home to a vibrant mix of communities, cultures, and backgrounds. We are committed to building a greener, fairer, and safer Southwark, and are looking for exceptional individuals to help shape this vision. The Director of Repairs and Maintenance plays a pivotal role in this mission, leading the strategic management of all repair and maintenance services across Southwark's housing portfolio.

About the role:

As the Director of Repairs and Maintenance, you will oversee the upkeep of 55,000 homes, ensuring that all maintenance activities are delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. You will have overall responsibility for managing both planned and emergency repairs, planned investment, building safety and compliance, delivering cost-effective solutions, and ensuring that services are provided in a timely and responsive manner. You will have the opportunity to drive innovation and excellence in our housing services, contributing directly to the wellbeing of Southwark's diverse communities.

You will have responsibility for managing substantial budgets, overseeing contracts, and ensuring our resources are deployed effectively. You will lead both internal teams and external contractors, ensuring full compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. Building and maintaining strong relationships with residents, contractors, and other key stakeholders will be crucial. You will engage directly with our communities to address their concerns, promote a resident-focused approach, and make a tangible difference to the lives of those living in our borough.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced leader who can demonstrate a strong track record of managing large-scale repairs and maintenance operations, ideally within housing or the public sector. You will have proven experience in overseeing significant budgets, managing complex contracts, and implementing strategies that enhance service delivery and efficiency.

Strong leadership and people management skills are essential. You will be adept at motivating and developing teams and be experienced in working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. Operating in a politically led environment, you will need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions that influence positive change.

We are looking for candidates who are committed to continuous improvement, innovation, and sustainability in the repairs and maintenance sector. You will bring a passion for driving cultural and operational changes that improve service delivery and increase resident satisfaction. In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards is essential, along with a commitment to advancing sustainability and innovation in all aspects of the role. This means you will need to hold full membership with either the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a key service in one of London's most diverse boroughs, contributing to a fairer, greener, and safer Southwark for all. If you are passionate about making a positive impact in your community, we would love to hear from you.
